About This Project

Located in Port Melbourne, Symex is a world-competitive manufacturer exporting over 75 per cent of its products to over 35 countries, including the Asia-Pacific region, North America and Europe . With a site history beginning in 1856, Symex is renowned for its consistently high-quality products and outstanding customer service. Symex is Australia ‘s largest producer of Ole products and also own Pental Soap Products which is Australia ‘s largest manufacturer of soap.

The replacement turbine is a Solar Centaur 50S gas low emissions gas turbine/generator package. This new turbine generator was combined with a new diverter stack and refurbished Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG). The steam generator produces steam by recovering the exhaust heat generated by the gas turbine. The facility produces 4.4MW of electricity and generates up to 18.5 tonnes of steam per hour with the aid of duct burners.

The steam is used for manufacturing operations in the pant as well as the generated electricity. Excess electricity is exported onto the Victorian grid. The Turbine can also act as a back up generator for the Symex plant at Port Melbourne by switching to island mode during black outs.

The cogeneration plant is fully automatic and operates 24 hours per day (Symex operations are 24/7), seven days per week, with minimum operator involvement.

In addition, the state-of-the-art turbine combustion system will result in nitrogen oxide pollution being reduced by more than 50% compared to a conventional system.

This facility will contribute to help Australia reduce greenhouse gas emissions by replacing the natural gas currently used in the gas fired boilers with the steam generated by the waste heat from the gas turbine. The cogeneration facility will reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20,000 tonnes per annum.
